How to Install a Cold Air Intake

Parts Geek carries cold air intake systems for customers who want to improve their horsepower and fuel efficiency. Although installing a cold air intake system is not a complicated procedure, it requires an understanding of auto mechanics.

Before beginning, make sure the car is parked on a level surface and that the parking brake is engaged. Open the hood to disconnect the battery while the engine is cool.

The first step is the removal of the factory air stock system; its placement differs in different models of cars. Take off the factory air intake tube’s vacuum hoses and clamps to remove the intake tube itself. Vehicles with MAFs will also need to have that part removed. Unscrew the bolts attaching the stock air box to the engine bay and lift it out.

Replace the existing air filter as necessary. Use a hose clamp to secure the air filter at the end of the cold air intake pipe. The holes in the intake pipe are meant to contain vacuum hoses. If there are more holes than hoses, plug them with grommets. These should come with the cold air intake kit.

A silicon adapter should also come with the kit. Attach the adapter to the throttle body so that it’s pointing away from the throttle, and slide the intake tube into the adapter. Tighten the adapter securely with hose clamps. Reattach the MAF if necessary.
